Watching the best CS: GO teams in the world compete for high stakes is an exciting event by itself, but placing a bet adds to the excitement.
Since its release in 2012, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has become the most popular first person shooter game  in the world. At the end of 2016, CS: GO surpassed Minecraft as the best-selling computer game of all time with 25 million copies sold. And at the end of 2018, Valve released a CS: GO free game.
Considering how popular this game is for both PC and console when it was released for the PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360, CS: GO has a huge and well-established fan base. This fan base will continue to grow as the game can now be played for free and the coverage of e-sports continues to grow in popularity.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has been popular on Twitch all year, but its popularity has grown for the CS: GO Major Championship. The original tournament was played in 2013 for a $ 250,000 prize pool with 16 teams; as of 2019, those numbers are up to 24 participants and a prize pool of $ 1,000,000.

In addition to earning higher winnings for participation in major tournaments, the top eight teams also earn an automatic bid in the next major tournament. Watching the best teams in the world compete at such high stakes is an exciting event by itself, but doing it when you bet raises your excitement to a whole new level.

How does betting on CS: GO work?

One of the elements that makes Counter-Strike: Global Offensive so popular is the ease with which viewers can follow and understand what is happening. Unlike esports such as League of Legends and Dota 2, where the learning curve is high when it comes to game styles and strategies and unique abilities, CS: GO is a first-person shooter game in which every team has clear and easy to  understand aims. This makes CS: GO an excellent esport for watching and betting by new fans as well as people with experience in the game.

Betting on CS: GO works the same way as betting on conventional sports. The most standard way to bet to a game is simply to bet on which team will win the game. There are other options, ranging from betting on how long a game will last to specific game events. No matter what type of bet you decide to place on CS: GO, there will be  betting odds on them. Teams that are likely to win pay out less than those who are unlikely to win and these differences are reflected in the odds.

How to understand CS: GO bets

Depending on where you decide to bet, betting odds are usually displayed in one of two formats; US odds or decimal odds. We will look at both in this section so that you feel safe when you read odds in each format.
Example: CS: GO match between NRG and Imperial, NRG would be the favorite to win. As such, in US odds this game can be referred to as NRG (-500) against Imperial (+350).
When a number has a "-" in front of it, that number is an indicator of how much money you would have to risk to earn $ 100. So in this example, at -500, you would have to risk $ 500 in NRG to win $ 100. The ratio remains the same no matter what the stake is, so you could also bet $ 100 to win  $ 20 or $ 1000 to win $ 200.

The underdog team  is denoted by a "+" and this number shows you how much money you would earn from a $ 100 bet. In the case of Imperial at +350, $ 100 would pay $ 350 in profit if Imperial wins.

The decimal odds sum up your entire payout, not just your profit. Using the same match and odds as an example, the decimal odds for that match will be indicated as NRG (1.20) against Imperial (4.50). So betting $ 500 on NRG will get you $ 500 x 1.2 = $ 600, which is your initial bet plus a $ 100 profit. Similarly, Imperial's $ 100 bet at 4.5 will pay $ 100 x 4.5 = $ 450, your original $ 100 plus $ 350 profit.

What can you bet on in CS: GO?

The example of NRG vs. Imperial above is a bet on a cash line in which the bettor on CS: GO simply bets which team will win the game. But there are many other ways to bet, including betting on teams against the spread.

An NRG supporter who believes the team will easily win over Imperial can earn a much better payout than the -500 offered, instead betting on NRG against the spread. This game may have an NRG spread (-6.5 rounds, -130) against Imperial (+6.5, -110). A NRG -6.5 bet will be paid if NRG wins this match by seven rounds or more, with a final score of 16 to 5. By betting on Imperial at +6.5, your bet will win if Imperial loses by six or less, for example a NRG 16-12 profit.

Instead of picking a side in the cash line or the spread, CS: GO bettors can also bet whether the game will run over or under the published number of rounds. Most games have a total value of 25.5 or 26.5 and you can bet if the combined end result will be above or below that amount. In the above examples, a 16-5 win from NRG will total 21 rounds and pay out to bettors who bet on Under. Scenario 16-12 will be a total of 28 rounds and will pay Over bets.

There are also many in-game options to bet on. Round 1 and Round 16 are known as "gun rounds" due to the fact that players start these rounds with guns as their weapons. These matches set the starting tone of the card and can be bet as individual events. For example, if you bet on a team that wins Round 16 and that happens, but then you continue to lose the game, your bet is still a winner since you only bet on that one gun.

Some bookmakers also offer prop bets to individual players and how they will perform against each other. For example, a prop bet could be which player between the two will have more kills during the game or more headshots during the game. Such bets allow Counter-Strike Global Offensive bettors to leverage their knowledge of players' specific strengths and weaknesses.
